The following is a listing of readily availble native shrubs from the Southeast.
 
Name:
Azaleas - Honeysuckle Azaleas a/k/a Native Azaleas
Botanical:
Rhododendron
Size: 6-10' H x 4-6' W
Exposure: Shade or afternoon shade
Bloom Color: Shades of pink, yellow, orange, red, and white
Bloom Time: Early to mid Spring
Water: Low once established
Features: Clusters of honeysuckle-like blooms are produced in spring before the foliage emerges on this deciduous azalea. At home in the shady woodland border or islands. Prefers well- drained soils.
Companions: Azaleas, Dogwoods, Red Bud Trees, and other plants that prefer afternoon shade.

Anise 'Florida'
Botanical:
Illicum floridanum
Size: 10-12' H x 6-8' W
Exposure: Shade
Bloom Color: Deep red
Bloom Time: April-May
Water: Appreciates damp soil
Features: Useful as an evergreen screen or specimen in shady locations. Fits in nicely around shady garden ponds. Unusual looking flowers are aromatic.
Companions: The bold foliage combines nicely with most all other shade loving plants.

Bloom Color: White in Spring followed by purple berries in Fall
Bloom Time: Spring
Water: Average
Features: Clusters of vibrant purple berries encircle the stems in fall on this unique native of the south. At home in the woodland border or islands.
Companions: Combine with other types of flowering shrubs and native plants in the sunny or partially shaded woodland border. Nice around garden ponds.

Water Needs: Moderate to Damp
Features: Very unique bottlebrush-like blooms cover this native shrub in Spring before the attractive blue-green foliage emerges. Excellent in sunny woodland borders, along creek banks, around garden ponds or other bodies of water.
Companions: Redbud Trees, Dogwoods, Soft Touch Holly, Native Azaleas, to name a few.

Size: 10-20' H x 8-10' W
Exposure: Full Sun or Partial Shade
Berry Color: Red
Berry Time: Large red berries in winter
Water Needs: Low
Features: Handsome dark blue-green foliage on this most popular tall growing pyramidal holly. Excellent on the corners of two story homes or buildings, as a screen, or a specimen in islands.
Companions: Dwarf Yaupon Holly, Indian Hawthorne, Junipers, Ornamental Grasses, and other screen plants such as Carolina Sapphire Cypress, Cryptomeria, Magnolias.

Holly 'Weeping Yaupon'
Botanical:
Ilex vomitoria
Size: 10-20' H
Exposure: Full Sun or Partial Shade
Berry Color: Red
Berry Time: A massive crop of small red beries in winter
Water Needs: Tolerates dry or damp soils
Features: The weeping habit of this yaupon adds plenty of personality to to the landscape. Let it weep to the ground or limb it up as a tree form. Excellent corner plant, screen, or tree-form specimen. Lots of red berries in winter!
Companions: Carissa Holly, Indian Hawthorne, Miss Huff Lantana, Junipers, Barberries, Loropetalums, Ornamental Grasses, and many more.

Hydrangea 'Oakleaf'
Botanical:
Hydrangea quercifolia
Size: 6-7' H x 6-9' W
Exposure: Shade or Afternoon Shade
Bloom Color: Large, 12" white flower panicles
Bloom Time: Summer
Water Needs: Low once established
Features: A large showy shrub for all seasons. Huge white panicle blooms in summer turn to pink in Fall. Large oakleaf-shaped leaves turn reddish-purple in Fall. Excellent in shady foundation plantings, islands, or perennial shade gardens.
Companions: Azaleas, Mahonia, Hosta Lilies, Perennial Ferns, Dogwoods, Redbud Trees, and other shade-loving plants and trees.

Lantana 'Miss Huff's Hardy'
Botanical:
Lantana camara
Height x Width: 5' H x 6-10' W
Exposure: Full Sun
Bloom Color: Orange - Yellow - Pink tricolor flower clusters
Bloom Time: May to Frost!
Water: Very drought tolerant
Features: The best butterfly magnet we know of!! Literally covered with tri-color flowers from late Spring to frost! The hardiest of Lantanas. Give this one room to grow. A must in every landscape and a Wilson Bros. Favorite. Totally drought tolerant and pest free. DO NOT PRUNE IN FALL!!
Companions: Other Lantanas, Verbenas, Setcresia (PurpleHearts), Sedums, and many other perennials. Junipers, Loropetalums, Yucca, Barberries, Hollies and many many more.

Lecouthoe 'Florida'

Bloom Color: White - inconspicuous - Fragrant
Bloom Time: Spring
Water: Average to low
Features: Very natural looking upright shrub with arching branches and rich green foliage and orange new growth. Excellent for use as an evergreen screen in shady situations. Fits in nicely around shady garden ponds or other bodies of water.
Companions: Mahonias, Azaleas, Florida Anise, and other plants that prefer afternoon shade.

Exposure: Full Sun or Partial Shade

Bloom Time:  
Water: Low to moderate
Features: Fast growing native shrub or small tree is excellent for screening, as a corner plant, or tree-form specimen. Foliage is pleasantly aromatic. Fits in great around pools, garden ponds, or other bodies of water.
Companions: Hollies, Junipers, Abelias, Spireas, Ruby Loropetalum, Gardenias, Indian Hawthorne, and many other shrubs. Underplant with Ivy, Cotoneaster, Liriope, or other low growing plants.
