Beautify the Fall Landscape With Colorful Pansies & Other Cool Season Annual Plants

If you think bigger is better, you'll be excited to hear about the new, super-sized flowering varieties of pansies. Among them are the Colossus, Majestic Giant II, Matrix, and XXL series, which stands for 'Extra Extra Large'.

Planting Pansies

When planting pansies bed preparation is crucial. It seems that many winters it just stays wet, almost never drying out. For this reason work organic matter into soil to allow for aeration and good drainage. SEE: Planting An Annual Flowerbed

Where organic matter has been incorporated into beds pansies perform well. In places where no organic matter has been incorporated, the flowers literally drown. So do a good job preparing your beds before shopping!

Pansies planted in mass make for the best show. At the time of planting, consider interplanting with spring bulbs like tulips and daffodils. These bulbs will emerge in Spring, popping right through the pansies to add exciting interest to your flower beds.

In addition to the large pansies, keep your eyes open for Purple Rain. Purple Rain is a mounding, cascading pansy that is perfect as a border plant in the landscape. It also is ideally suited to baskets, planters and window boxes. The flowers are dark-purple with hints of blue in the center.

Violas are making a strong comeback these days and many new varieties are coming available in this series of 'miniature' pansies.

TIP: The best planting time for Pansies in Zone 8 is from September 15 to November 1st.

NOTE: When planting pansies or violas in containers make sure to use a good premium potting soil that holds moisture evenly. Fertilize Pansies with Pansy Booster or Milorganite.

Pansy season is always just around the corner here, the colors are terrific and you'll want plenty of them. So when the time comes, get your soil prepared!
