TIP: Though some retailers are now offering spring annual flowers at this time, we highly recommend that you wait to plant them until early to mid April when all chances of frost have passed. SEE: Annual Listings

___ If you did not apply pre-emergence weed control to your lawn in February do so now. Broadcast Team2G Crabgrass Preventer over your Bernuda, Zoysia, Centipede, or Fescue lawn to prevent the emergence of crabgrass and many other types of pesty spring weeds. One bag of Team 2G covers 22,800 square feet (1/2 Acre) Caution: If you are planning to overseed your fescue lawn this month do not apply pre-emergent weed preventer at this time. SEE: Lawn Fertilization Programs

___ Fertilize shrubs and trees with 14-7-7 Nursery & Landscape Fertilizer or Milorganite. *Caution: Wait to fertilize spring-flowering shrubs such as Azaleas and Indian Hawthorne until after they have finished blooming. SEE: Fertilizing Shrubs and Trees

___ If you did not fertilize your fescue lawn in February do so now. Broadcast 32-3-6 ProScape Lawn Fertilizer w/2% Iron for spring-lawn feeding and deep greening. To determine the amount of fertilizer necessary for complete coverage measure and multiply the length by the width your lawn area(s) for total square footage. SEE: Fertilize & Maintain a Fescue Lawn

___ Fertilize perennial plants now with a good flower fertilizer such as Colorburst or Milorganite. Additionally you may apply handful or two of organic compost such as Claycutter or Mushroom Compost around each emerging plant. SEE: Fertilize Perennials Plants

___ Fertilize pansies for the last time of the season. Broadcast Pansy Booster, Colorburst or Milorganite fertilizer in pansy beds, or use a liquid fertilizer such as Miracle Gro for container plantings. SEE: Fertilize Annual Flower Beds

___ Fertilize roses. An application of Fertilome Rose Food with Systemic Insecticide every 6 weeks or so during the season will keep those pesty insects away. SEE: All About Roses

___ Prune Crape Myrtles and other ornamental shrubs and trees as soon as possible - before new growth begins to emerge. SEE: Pruning Crape Myrtles or Pruning Information for other types of plants and trees.

Now is a good time to refurbish existing annual flowebeds or vegetable gardens - or build new ones - for the upcoming spring. Simply till or turn in a 1/4 to 1/2-inch layer of organic compost into the flower bed or vegetable garden soil. If you do not make your own compost Claycutter Organic Soil Amendment, Mushroom Compost, Wilson Bros. Compost Mix or Milorgantite are available at the nursery in bulk or bags. These ammendments will serve to replenish your garden soil with the rich organic matter necessary to successfully grow healthy flowers and vegetables. SEE: Making a Compost Pile or Bin SEE: Preparing a Vegetable Garden SEE: Planting An Annual Flower Bed

___ You may seed or overseed Fescue lawns at this time. There are several types of fescue available for seeding lawns. RTF Advantage Fescue is a brand new generation of spreading turf-type fescue that has shown to self-repair reducing the need of over-seeding. Extensive studies have shown RTF Advantage Fescue to be heat and drought tolerant as well as disease and insect resistant. Other turf-type fescues and Ky 31 fescue are also available, though Ky 31 is best suited for use in pastures. To determine amount of seed necessary for adequate coverage measure the length by the width of your lawn area(s) to find total square footage. Fertilize newly seeded Fescue lawns with Pennington’s 18-24-6 Starter Fertilizer. Apply pelletized lime at the rate suggested below. It is best to braodcast seed, fertilizer, and lime with a rotary-type walk behind or shoulder spreader. SEE: RTF Advantage Fescue SEE: Planting a Lawn

___ Apply pelletized lime at this time to fescue, Bermuda, and zoysia lawns. If you have never applied lime to your lawn a one-time application of 40 lbs per 500 -1,000 square feet usually corrects soil ph to a level sufficient for these grasses to thrive and fertilizers activate. Make sure to use pellitized lime as it activates instantly. To determine amount of lime necessary for adequate coverage measure and multiply the length by the width of your lawn area(s) to find total square footage. SEE: Fertilizing & Maintaining Bermuda or Zoysia Lawns SEE: Fertilizing & Maintaining a Fescue Lawn

___ Apply Bayer Systemic Insecticide now around for year-long control of insects on Crape Myrtles, Azaleas, Roses, Flowering Fruit Trees, Junipers, and various other types of trees and shrubs.

___ Perennial plants such as Bleeding Hearts, Dianthus, Lenton Rose, and various others are beginning to arrive this month at the nursery. This is a good time to get some great bargains at the nursery on perennials carried over from the last season. SEE: Perennial Listings

___ If you would like to have a landscape design drawn for all or part of your property now is a good time. Call the nursery to to set up a free appointment. 770-954-9862 SEE: WilsonBrosLandscape.com
