___ Apply pre-emergent weed control to lawns now. Broadcast Lebanon Team 2G Pre-emergent Weed Preventer over your Bermuda, Zoysia, Centipede, or Fescue lawn to control crabgrass and many other Spring weeds by killing the seeds of these weeds before they germinate. One bag of Team 2G covers 22,000 square feet!! ***Caution: If you are planning to overseed your Fescue lawn this month, or in March, do not apply pre-emergent weed preventer at this time.

___ Apply pre-emergent weed control to beds, islands and other mulched areas of the landscape. Broadcast Treflan pre-emergent weed preventer granules in shrub beds, islands, and other non-lawn areas to control weeds for up to 1 year! Treflan works by killing weed seeds before they have a chance to germinate. SEE: Weed Control Islands & Beds

___ Seed or overseed Fescue lawns beginning in late February. There are several types of fescue available for seeding lawns. RTF Advantage Fescue is a brand new generation of spreading turf-type fescue that has shown to self-repair reducing the need of over-seeding. Extensive studies have shown RTF Advantage Fescue to be heat and drought tolerant as well as disease and insect resistant. Other turf-type fescues and Ky 31 fescue are also available, though Ky 31 is best suited for use in pastures. Measuring your lawn area(s) for square footage helps to determine the amount of seed necessary for adequate coverage. Measure length x width of area(s) to be covered for total square footage. Fertilize newly seeded Fescue lawns with Pennington’s 18-24-6 Starter Fertilizer. Apply pelletized lime at the rate suggested below. It is best to braodcast seed, fertilizer, and lime with a rotary-type walk behind or shoulder spreader.

___ Apply pelletized lime at this time to Fescue, Bermuda, and Zoysia lawns. If you have never applied lime to your lawn a one-time application of 40 lbs per 500 -1,000 square feet usually corrects soil ph to a level sufficient for these grasses to thrive and for fertilizers applied to activate. Make sure to use pellitized lime as it activates instantly. Measuring your lawn area(s) for square footage helps to determine the amount of lime necessary for adequate coverage. Measure length x width of area(s) to be covered for total square footage. SEE: Fertilizing & Maintaining Bermuda or Zoysia Lawns or SEE: Fertilizing & Maintaining a Fescue Lawn

___ Fertilize established fescue lawns now with 27-4-6 Pro Turf Lawn Food that slowly releases and includes iron for deep greening. To determine how much fertilizer to apply measure your lawn area(s) for total square footage by multiplying the length x width of area(s) to be covered. SEE: Fertilize & Maintain a Fescue Lawn

___ Fertilize roses after pruning in late February. An application every 6 weeks or so of Fertilome Rose Food with Systemic Insecticide will keep those pesty insects away throughout the active growing season. SEE: All About Roses

___ Now is a good time to prepare or refurbish annual flowebeds or vegetable gardens for the upcoming spring. Till or turn in a 1/4 to 1/2-inch layer of organic compost into the garden soil. If you do not make your own compost Claycutter Organic Soil Amendment or Wilson Bros. Compost Mix are available at the nursery in bulk or bags to replenish your garden soil with the rich organic matter necessary to successfully grow healthy flowers and vegetables. SEE: Prepare a Vegetable Garden SEE: Prepare an Annual Flower Bed SEE: How To Make a Compost Pile or Bin

___ February is the last month of winter when you may safely transplant/relocate shrubs or trees. Before digging up the shrub or tree to be transplanted, dig the hole where it will be relocated to. When digging up the shrub or tree make sure to start by digging at or beyond the outside branch-line to retain as much of the root system as possible. Transplant as quickly as possible to new location and mix in Claycutter Soil Ammendment at a 50/50 ratio with the soil dug from the hole. After transplanting apply Root Stimulator and prune back the shrub or tree by one-third it’s height. Water thoroughly and mulch with a liberal layer of pinestraw or wood mulch. SEE: Transplant a Shrub or Tree

___ Contrary to popular belief, February, and in fact the entire winter season, is a great time to plant most all shrubs and trees. Winter planting of most dormant shrubs and trees is very safe and allows them to acclimate to their new home before receiving the huge benefit of an early-Spring root flush. There is absoulutely no danger to most shrubs and trees planting them in February. We successfully plant through the entire winter! SEE: Plant a Shrub or Tree

___ Heavy pruning of shrubs and trees can be done at this time. February is the best month to prune Crape Myrltes and many other plants and trees. * CAUTION: DO NOT prune Lantanas until the new growth begins to emerge in Spring. If you have any questions about pruning please feel free to call the nursery. We are here 7 days a week to answer any of your questions. SEE: Pruning Crape Mytles and Various Other Shrubs and Trees
